Marta Devilish

It’s not everyday that I cross paths with such a combination of both beauty and intelligence as my next guest. Hailing from Macedonia, she is both an internationally published model & actress as well as holds a bachelor on the Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy, studying Material Engineering and Nanotechnology. In 2016 her love of Metallurgy and Nanotechnology led her to develop Smartsoles, (a shoe sole that produces electricity when you walk), and she has much more planned for the up and coming. She manages to find the time to do what she loves, which includes a range of alternative modeling, from styles ranging from Gothic to pin up, cooking, working out, and more.

Who is this incredibly talented and gifted person you ask? None other than Marta Devilish! And here’s the interview she did for Altgothictalent:

Luny: Can you please tell everyone your modeling name and how you came about choosing it?

Marta Devilish: My stage name a.k.a modelling name is Marta Devilish. Marta is short from Martina and Devilish became my nickname since I was really, really young. I was obsessing about Manchester United the famous football team and since the fans were called the Red Devils and I was little, I became Devilish. When I started using MSN and other social media platforms that was my constant nickname and later on I used it in gaming as well as my name. Naturally, it evolved in a modelling name as well because it did fit me really well.

Luny: I see you are interested in Nanotechnology science. Can you tell me how the ideas and concepts of such science came about and what currently is your role with said science?

Marta Devilish: I am a bachelor on the Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy studying Material Engineering and Nanotechnology. Since I was little, I was always sort of divided between the artistic and the geeky, tech side but I loved and developed both. I always said it’s not me if I don’t do both simultaneously and I cannot exist with one without the other. I love using both sides of my brain. And it does make me a better engineer and a more creative model when I develop them mutually.

They truly complement each other and it’s what makes me unique. Many people in Macedonia always told me I can’t be both. I have to choose to either be a model or an engineer. I just couldn’t go against my self and my calling. It’s fun tho, people tell me that ONLY in my home country, and I did travel the world. Everyone else around seems to be so supportive of both my profession and my hobby. However, I can feel the stigma in my country in many areas, it’s what you’d expect from an often oppressed, poorly developed country.

It’s really hard to influence and change society so I choose who my company is, respect myself enough to walk away from everything negative and learn from those experiences and be more open-minded and supportive towards those who chose to be more wholesome and experimental in their style, appearance, sense of music, hobbies, profession etc.

Luny: I noticed you are an internationally published model, can you give us a few brands/designers/companies etc you’ve work for and which have been your favorites so far?

Marta Devilish: I have worked with so many that I can’t keep the list anymore. When I was starting I had a list of every brand that I was collaborating with and I was overworking myself, trying to deliver to every gig that wanted me to be their model. Nowadays, my life is so busy I’ve grown to be more selective.

I am currently working with Collectif Clothing, Pin-Up Girl Clothing, Furless cosmetics, Jawbreaker, Lunatick Cosmetic labs, Pinky Paradise etc. From my home country Macedonia I love working with Drama Studio because of their bold style and their renowned image worldwide as well as some lifestyle partnerships I have such as the campaigns for the BU and C-THRU perfumes, PlanUm – the daily planer etc.

Luny: Balancing science with art and modeling, do you ever find yourself lacking enough time to do anything you like?

Marta Devilish: Yes, I do. And it truly depends on how committed you are, how much you want something and what kind of value it brings to your life. I love cooking and I absolutely cherish the time spent with family and friends. Due to my overworking, I often forgot the essentials and now I’m slowly getting back at them. I love my plants, I am a cactus girl and I absolutely cherish my library and my healthy lifestyle filled with nature, work out and exploring. Traveling is also a must but luckily due to my good performance, I often have the opportunity to travel the world on seminars, symposiums and conferences that are truly enriching and provide a great pile of knowledge.

Luny: You had much success in science, in 2016 you developed the ‘smart sole’ a shoe sole that produces electricity when you walk, what other projects have you begun working on now and what can we expect to see for the future in regards to your material engineering and nanotechnology?

Marta Devilish: Well, I had the opportunity to be an exchange student at Kent State University where I studied Aerospace Engineering. There with my team, we built a functional prototype for better storage and examination called ‘the tool flipping jig’ we didn’t bother with the name, we bothered with the performances and the delivery. It was tested in ATA Group Inc Factory and supported by Kent State. I did a lot of scientific research that resulted in published papers, pilot projects and prototypes. One is the ‘Duopod 1.0’ which is a piezoelectric robot and we showcased it at the SMASIS conference.

My most recent award was ‘Extraordinary presentation Award’ for the article ‘Feasibility of an eco-ethical simulation in a conditionally real world’ on GREDIT2018 International Conference that was held in Skopje 22-25th of March by St. Cyril and Methodius University, Technical Campus. It was handed to me by ISSE – BENA president Mariana Golumbeanu. I also had the honour to represent my country on the prestigious St. Gallen Symposium in Switzerland and talk about ‘The future of work’ and I did a TED talk on TEDxAUBG covering retrocausality.

Luny: Aside from yourself, what other models do you know who have a love of science or are far from the typical stereotype most people make models out to be?

Marta Devilish: Oh many models are extraordinary and are amazing at both STEM and posing. For example, Alexandre Robicquet who did the Yves Saint Laurent Y fragrance ad. When he’s not at Stanford working on early cancer detection or programming robots, Robicquet is also one of three founders of Crossing Minds, a startup venture aimed at using AI for platforms and apps that adapt to a user’s particular habits (the first of which, Hai, provides custom recommendations for books, podcasts, restaurants and more launches early next year). I’ll also mention Susan Finkbeiner and I suggest you google this one out.

From the Balkans I’ll point out Idda Van Munster, she is a pharmaceutical student and has the most amazing travel blogs with a divine vintage outlook. But I know many other models who are not the typical make-up Instagrammers although they have epic make-up looks as well and I am proud to have them in my friend list.

Luny: Can you give us a little background on why you started modeling and the experience it’s been for you?

Marta Devilish: I was always into Photography. Since I had my first camera and later on my phone I couldn’t stop expressing myself through it, capturing little tiny perfect moments from ordinary life forever. When I was in high-school I joined a Photography club and since my hometown was a small place and somewhat small-minded for current worldwide trends, there weren’t many girls who wanted to be in front of the camera. So I started being in front of it in one condition – to be myself and to represent my style, no matter how dark or odd it was. And soon enough big brands and big pages started to notice me on facebook since it didn’t have the algorithms it has now. And many international models saw my potential and basically pushed me to work more and launched my career.

Luny: Can you think of anyone in life currently who doesn’t seem to get enough credit for the good they do, and if so whom and why?

Marta Devilish: Oh, many amazing people! I would say Greta Gardner, Gaelira Gwaelon, Dorothy Dew, Dilek Aspires and many, many others! They do an incredible job, they’re committed, constantly put up quality and are amazing professionals. Too bad they aren’t quite yet ruling the galaxy with their unique approach but I am sure they’ll do it soon enough!

Luny: If you had to give up one thing the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

Marta Devilish: The fact that I’m hypersensitive and over emotional because it causes such unneeded stress that serves no one!

Luny: Finally, is there anyone you’d like to say thanks to or any websites you’d like to mention?

Marta Devilish: I generally want to thank everyone that stood by my side, collaborated with me through out life and was there for me especially in hard times. I love you all and thank you for contributing to get me where I am today. I cherish every single one of you, you damn know who you epic guys are <3 And great thanks to P.S. photography, she is one of my all time favorite photographers and I love working with her.
